Evans Scholars, on the campus of the University of Michigan, is designed to reflect the pride and ownership that the owners feel for their benefactor organization. These scholarship houses are on a number of campuses countrywide, all designed to last a minimum of 60 years and provide a strong sense of home and community for the scholars. This new home is located on wide major thoroughfare in Ann Arbor. The street is lined with many gracious new homes, many that have been converted to sororities and fraternities. This new building continues the tradition of these large gracious residences. |

Project Description:
Location: Ann Arbor, Michigan

Challenge:
The largest Resident Lifestyle Student Housing project in the country to date, 650,000 square feet to house 1200 students. The program includes 4 bedroom and 2 bedroom efficiency suites. As well as to provide hotel like amenities in the form of common gathering areas, a fitness center, a small food service, laundry, a coffee shop, a print center, a game area, meeting rooms, and a 2nd floor terrace are where the students can enjoy outdoor life in the warmer months. Additionally, retail at the street level, drop off area for move-in and move-out days, extensive bike storage and underground parking for 200 cars.
Solution:
A 24 story U-shaped building was designed, laid out in a hotel format with double loaded corridors with natural light into the ends of each corridor section. An elegant lobby space leads through a secured access to the upper floors. The second floor is dedicated to the common areas listed above. Vegetated roofs, geothermal HVAC, solar shading, healthy material choices and rooms that can have flexible furniture arrangements were addition design components. |
